Who are we?
There are four Consultant Orthodontists working in the Cleft Lip and Palate service in Alder Hey and Manchester Children’s Hospitals. As well as working at these hospital sites, we participate in Outreach clinics in North Wales and Lancashire. Orthodontic treatment is provided at the Children’s Hospitals and if appropriate, at District General Hospitals in the North West and North Wales in partnership with local Consultant Orthodontists.
Our Role
Orthodontists are dentists who help straighten teeth. A cleft can affect the way teeth grow. We assess and monitor the teeth and jaws of children with clefts, providing diagnosis, advice and orthodontic treatment for children and adults as appropriate. Not all patients need their teeth straightened. If they do, then braces may be fitted.
When do we see clients?
We usually meet patients born with cleft lip and/or palate and their families at multidisciplinary clinics. Often our involvement starts after patients are around 7 years old, but we are available to provide advice at earlier ages if required.
