Ward 3A is a friendly 28 bedded ward caring for children with a variety of surgical conditions.
The ward houses one of the two northwest regional cleft lip and palate units
3A consists of a 4 bedded close observation bay and 24 cubicles, all with en-suite facilities.

Visiting Times
Parents are welcome on the ward 24hours a day. All other visitors are asked to visit between 2pm and 7.30pm only. We request there are no more than 4 people at the bedside at any time.
Activities
The ward has a playroom with a variety of toys and books for children of all ages. There is also an outdoor play area which is open at various times during the day. The play specialists will be available to provide games, crafts and toys to occupy your child.
Each bed has its own TV. All ward TVs are turned off at 9pm due to the watershed. The hospital has free Wi-Fi.
Play therapists can also help prepare your child for surgery on the day of admission using play and distraction techniques. They are available to show you and your child around the ward prior to admission if you so wish. Please contact the ward to arrange a visit.
Facilities for Parents and Carers
Each bed space for facilities for one parent to sleep next to their child if they so wish. For those families who are travelling a long distance accommodation may be available at Ronald MacDonald House on site. This can be booked on admission and is a free facility for parents to stay whilst their child is in hospital (a refundable deposit of £25 is required on check in)
Rooms are not always available but are there are several budget hotels within walking distance.
There is a beverage bay on the ward with a fridge for parents to make hot drinks and store thier own food. Tea and coffee is provided although we ask for a donation towards the costs. Hot drinks cannot be taken onto the main ward area.
A restaurant and salad bar can be found in the main atrium along with W H Smith, Costa Coffee and The Baguette Shop. Vending machines are available to purchase snacks and drinks when the shops are closed. There are local shops and a large supermarket within walking distance.

Ward 77 is a 21 bedded mixed specialty surgical ward. We specialise in Renal, Urology, Complex ENT, Cleft Lip and Palate, Plastics, Dental and Ophthalmology.

Visiting Times
Parents of patients have unrestricted visiting. All other visitors may visit between 1.00 am and 5.00 pm and again from 6.00 pm until 8.00 pm. The ward operates a policy of protected mealtimes between 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm, and from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm where all non essential work stops to allow the children to enjoy their meal in peace and quiet. The main ward lights are also turned off at this time to encourage a quiet environment. Visitors will not be allowed on the ward during these times so please do not be offended if you are asked to leave.
All visitors must abide by the infection control policies in place and decontaminate their hands on entering and leaving the ward. We ask that there is maximum of two visitors (not including parents) at the bedside please. Due to infection control restrictions, we cannot accept flowers. We do not allow visitors to bring hot drinks or food onto the ward.
Activities
Ward 77 has a playroom staffed by our Play Specialist Pauline Shaw. The play room has various activities for children of all ages. Our Play Specialist, is available for distraction and preparation therapies. Televisions are available at each bedspace but must be switched off at 9.00 pm and DVD players are available for patients to use. There is also a Wii and an X Box.
Ward 77 also has a Teen Zone for teenagers (but they must be supervised by an adult) with a chill out area, pool table and television.
Facilities for Parents and Carers
We can accommodate one parent at the bedside overnight and most bed spaces have a pull down bed for parents. In most cases accommodation for a second parent can be arranged but this will be away from the ward area. There are allocated parents shower rooms and toilets on the ward along with a parent room where food and hot drinks can be taken. There is a fridge, hot water, toaster and a microwave for your use. Food items in the ward pantry are for patients only.
Ronald McDonald House operates parents accommodation to sleep up to four people in each room. This cannot be booked in advance and is not guaranteed
